Pacific Veterinary HouseCalls:  Pet Loss Support Resources

Mostly local / Seattle area counselors and support groups, with additional support by phone and online chat groups.

Washington Pet Loss Resources

Listing of end-of-life pet care providers who ask to be included - from counselors and support groups to crematories.

The Argus Institute at Colorado State University, College of Veterinary Medicine.

In a box on the right simply labelled "Argus Institute" there are drop-down menus with a number of helpful, supportive articles.

Honoring the Bond, Support for Animal Owners by The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center.

The section on "Resources for Pet Owners" has excellent articles on decision making as well as understanding grief in adults, children and pets.  Additional support listings can be found in the menu column.

Pet Loss Support / Pet Loss Hotline by Washington State University, College of Veterinary Medicine.

This is more than just a phone number:  The online support pages have stories shared by clients as well as resource articles on understanding pet loss and the emotions involved.  Look in the left-side drop-down menu for resource listings.

   Pain Assessment Scales

These assessment tools are very helpful for our patients, but were designed for gauging acute pain in otherwise healthy cats and dogs (sudden illness or trauma, and post-surgical patients).  Because dogs and cats with chronic pain tend to mask their symptoms or otherwise 'learn to cope,' it is difficult to create one-size-fits-most chronic pain scales specifically for end-of-life patients.
